The SUCCUBUS Chronicles

Succubus. Vampire. Demon. Creatures of the Night. Years ago I did a a collaborative series fueled by my love of horror films and halloween. It would exercise my passion for fashion and hair, produce two sequel, involve lots of talented artists, published three times and created an amazing experience. Looking back in retrospect we created a timeless body of work that is worth a revisit….The Succubus Chronicles

The initial collection was conjured together with award winning make up artist, Isidro Valencia and with published photographer, Joey Goldsmith. The three of us discussed our love for all things macabre and dark and wanted to create a serious collection inspired by the folklore of the “succubus”. I was responsible with both hair and styling along with creative direction with both Joey and Isidro. We secured three models and got permission to shoot at the historical Culbertson Mansion in Downtown Louisville, Kentucky.

We spent an entire day at the eerie Culbertson mansion with its beautiful construction and full of historical antiques. I was not allowed to use hairspray whatever on the premises as it would collect in the air and unto the vintage heirlooms. That was a fun challenge. I was also in charge of styling and purchased expensive garments from Goodwill of which I paired jewelry and accessories.

Joey did an amazing job of telling a story with the three models we had. He scouted various areas of the mansion prior to setting up lights and for staging every area we utilized. Jacey Calloway was our lead who created the allure and beauty a succubus needs in order to drain the life and energy from her victims. Chris Diaz and Erica Goldsmith play the unsuspecting couple that venture into the home of the succubus. As the night progress so do Jacey’s power and both Erica and Chris become creatures of the night.

Isidro created a very clean palette that encompassed the sultriness the models needed but turned it up a notch when the Succubus turned into her dark form. Heavy kohl rimmed eyes and defined brows with lots of contour and red lips. For hair I made a lot of custom extensions but wanted lots of texture with curls and lots of volume. Kind of the old world meets the new world for a timeless feel.

A sequel was brought up a year later and we wanted to go bigger and harder with this one. So many ideas came to mind but we knew the fashions would play a larger role for this and so we asked designer Genna Yussman Greene to create a collection for a follow up to our Succubus. She created a very slick and sexy collection in dark hues of red, violet and black featuring various textures, slim fitting and strategically showed off skin.

We talked about using Jacey as our lead and inviting both Erica and Chris back but needed to up the ante and added two new models, Elora Antunez and John Wells. We split the shooting in two days. Day one was at ThoughtFly Studios and focused more on the artistry of hair and make up and was strictly beauty images. Day 2 was on location in full fashion editorial mode. This way we created two collections with two completely different vibes using the same models.

This time we got permission to use the lovely home of Janice Carter Levitch who had home in the highlands: Old gorgeous home covered with lots of shrubbery, stones and trees. There were lots of areas outside that provided a beautiful landscaped to create the darker world of the Succubus.

We spent an entire day (14 hours) staging, prepping models and photographing all models. We were tired but knew we had made magic. Isidro pushed the makeup much more: much darker and harder and I turned up the hair full fashion runway volume with classic waves and vampy curls.

My Vintage Valentine

Romance, Beauty, love and all things pretty. I have wanted to do a Valentine Themed photoshoot for some time. My creative partner, Genna Yussman Greene suggested we do one at the beginning of 2017.  Genna had put together some vintage dressers and I wanted to do some classy updos and polished hair. We enlisted our buddy, Isidro Valencia for make up and two gorgeous models and our team was set.

z1+JPG.jpg

We wanted to fuse romance, with big hair and vintage styling for a timeless feel. Genna ordered a custom floral backdrop to be used for the shoot. We chose two gorgeous models, Emily and Kristina. We have worked with both before and chose both girls for their beautiful facial structures, Their tall lean looks and their positive attitudes on set.

23jpg.jpg

This collection was release exclusively by Bangstyle as a featured collection. The staff at Bangstyle have been so supportive of the work we do and they said the timing for the release was perfect.

For This undo I converged all of Kristina's hair upwards into a ponytail I then added a long hair pad and a large wefted hair extension and form the hair over the pad into the shape using Fashion Works 12 and a finishing brush from Tearsheet. Control Addict 28 was used to finalize the look.

This updo was a lot of fun. I was watching a lot of the old "Dynasty" so I did this timeless, voluminous undo with Redken's Guts 10 for volume. Next hair was pulled upwards into a couple of ponytails. A small hair pad was used for the bump on top that hair was covered with Emily's hair using Fashion Works 12. I smoothed the hair using a small finishing brush. The other ponytails that hair was backcombed, smoothed and rolled into shape with bobbie pins. Finished with Control Addict 28 and Shine Flash 03.

The vintage look was set using Iron Shape 11 and Sam Villa's marcel iron and pinned to cool. Afterwards the hair was brushed out using Tearsheet's static free large tail comb and Fashion Works 12.  No bend clips were placed in the hair to set it while Isidro finished Emily's her make up application.

Money

I'm always excited to work with new creative teams and opportunities always present themselves. I was asked by one of the models, Rebecca Bien whom I had previously book for a hair color collection. She ask if I was interested and if I would be available to do her hair for a photoshoot

. She had booked Make up artist, Matt Goodlett whom I've worked with on several occasions and photographer, Ronnie Louis. She said the concept was to include "Big" hair and "Glitter" and somewhat disco theme... of course I said yes!!

I had never worked with Ronnie before so I was excited and I arrived at Joe Goodwin's photography studio were our collection would be photographed. I had  brought some jewels, glitter, hair pads and hair extensions and a wig in my kit. Matt and I were inspired by the concept and worked together to create two looks.

the team

the team

for the first looks we wanted a long flowing look. I used a front lace wig that I lightly heat styled with a slight bend in the ends. I wanted to focus on the part so I took Redken Hardward Gel 16 and loose green glitter and mixed thoroughly. Using a color brush I applied the glitter in the center of the part and while hold the brush flat spread the color outwards. While Matt did Rebecca's make up The glitter gel had adequate time to dry and I finished the look with Control Addict 28.

Make up looked created by Matt included matching green lip color, defined brows and eyes and soft highlighter. Lastly a diffused dollar sign on the apple of her cheek. Nails were finished with a high gloss coat of black polish.

We turned up the tunes and Rebecca posed for the camera.

For the second look. I brushed Rebecca's hair upwards into a high pony and secured with elastics. I used Redken's Fashion Works 12 working spray and my Tearsheet finishing brush to create a smooth finish. I then used an oversize hair pad by Kris Sorbie I bobbi pins to her scalp. The I tookcustom hair extensions colored with City Beats Coral and Pink and brown and blonde that I crimped with the Sam Villa Texture iron converged them together and strateigically wrapped them over the hair pad.

For make up, Matt artfully placed body jewels and shimmer and highlighter over Rebecca's body.  He turned it up a notch with a smoky eye and deep pink lip hue. Lastly a diffused dollar sign on the apple of her cheek.

Anomaly

I love Avant Garde hairstyling, anything goes. This collection stems from my love for all things horror and sci fi. I wanted this collection to have the asian horror feel to it and the models would become these beautiful, macabre "mutants". I wanted the hair to create visual movement, that similar to water pouring from a pitcher.

The complete collection photographed by Jacob Roberts

The complete collection photographed by Jacob Roberts

I knew I did not want wardrobe for this collection and instead opted for body make up by award winning make up artist, Isidro Valencia. We had previously worked together with photographer, Jacob Roberts who shot Isidro's Make up collection a year  prior.  I knew I wanted him to photograph this collection based on his style of photography.

This collection was 1 of 5 shoots executed in the winter of 2016 for NAHA 2017. Although it was not nominated  we were honored to have it featured on Bangstyle.

I did some preliminary sketches for inspiration but was most inspired when I visited a local hair shop and fund two-toned hair extensions in various lengths. I took them home and quickly unpackaged them. I hand cut wire mesh to create the base for the hairpieces by shaping them into "stair like" pieces in various lengths.

red shape

I then meticulously hot glued the extensions parallel onto the mesh frames. The top pieces were created by cutting the hair away from the "weft" and sewing them into the shape to dorm the top of the hairpieces.

I love creating something that will eventually be adapted to the model's head. I was very happy with models I booked for this collection. I wanted both male and female models.

To adhere the hair pieces to each models head, scalp hair was cornrowed to create a supportive base for hair and bobbie pins. The top pieces were created by cutting hair extension at the "wefted" (where the hair was sewn together) coverging them together with needle and thread.

Prep time for each model average 2 1/2 hours for both hair and make up for a total of 7 hours. We started early on a cold morning fortunately I rented a nice studio space at Breckingridge Inn. We staggered the models so they would be fresh and energized for their time in front of the lens and to give us adequate time to ready each model. I made sure to have plenty of food on set to keep everyone happy.

Working with Isidro is amazing. We always pair well together on set. He created a red contour look on each of the models bodies an faces, Dark rimmed eyeliner on the female models and red lips on all models.

Redken NBT part I

Well I decided to start a blog so here is my first post. The last four weeks have been crazy busy and I had been meaning to some how showcase my experience. Better late than never I say.

I was named one of The Next Best Thing (NBT) by Redken based on several hair color & styling challenges I had to post on Instagram for several weeks. The prize for winning would be an all expense trip to L.A. for a week of educational and inspirational experiences for six winners.

Redken NBT 2017

Redken NBT 2017

I figured I had nothing to lose. I was so happy when photographer and designer Genna Yussman Greene agreed to shoot and style all the shoots. I booked three make up artist and a total of six models for each challenge.

When Redken announced the winners. I was overjoyed as was Genna. Whether I won or not, I really just wanted to do the photoshoots and I love a good challenge. Winning the contest meant a lot to me and I was fortunate that all my clients willingly rescheduled their appointments.

Flying to L.A. was so exciting as I had no idea what the week would entail other than the itinerary that Redken had emailed to me. Other than two of the winners I had never met the other winners. After spending a week with a group of people you really get to know them. I had a wonderful time meeting and spending time with Redken artists Kyle Pinneo, Nikki Diederich, Aundreya Shae Rich, Woodward Bartlet and Cheryl Bakke

Venice Beach

Venice Beach

Redken hosted us at the Standard Hotel in downtown L.A. I went to the rooftop upon arrival and greeted the other artists that had arrived.  After a cocktail and meet and greet I retired to my room. The next day was a free day and a group of us went to Venice Beach to enjoy some sunshine. Afterwards, we headed back to the hotel to get ready to meet Rodney Cutler at the Kimpton hotel rooftop party.

The next day we had a photoshoot mentored by Rodney at Bangstyle's office in Encino.  We spent the entire day with the lovely staff of Bangstyle as well as photographer, Clair Huntsberger and NYX cosmetics make up artist, Susan Alba. Rodney gave amazing advice but didn't try to take over. My model Maria, was very sweet. I did a layered dry cut on her hair and created a wet like hairstyle with braids and elastics.
