MOD MOODS

The 1960’s are alive and well in Louisville, Kentucky at Absolute Studio. This retro inspired collection was photographed at Absolute Studio here in town. Team members Genna Yussman Greene and I love dabbling in vintage theme photoshoots incorporating our own flair and some modern artistry to give the photoshoot our own signature flavor. We invited in local body painter and mua, Matt Goodlett.

Never one to stifle anyone’s creative, both Genna and I created a diverse vision board and gave free range to all the artists involved in this collaboration to bring their own artistry to the table. I really enjoy working with different artists as I feel this helps to elevate ones work.

Scheduling is probably the most challenging aspect of photoshoots. We were doing this pre Christmas so the season was already in full boom in our respective careers and the models window of opportunity was short with the impending holiday. We book four models from the region. I enjoy working with models that I have rapport with from past projects but I also love working with new models. We had a great set of young ladies who more than brought the drama for the camera lens.

Of course a lot of prep work is required to execute a stellar photoshoot. Week going into planning as well as a lot of communication to ensure everyone involved understand their roles. Genna spent a lot of time curating the vintage wardrobe collection as well as finding the right accessories and props. I spend a lot of time making two custom wigs for this collection. Hand sewn, cut and styled. I love the transformation of the models using wigs and hairpieces. In addition this would also help with timing as I would have four models I was responsible for doing hair for and having the wigs done in advanced helps big time. Models Alicia and Lucy would wear the custom wigs.

The shoot which took place at the studio was a cold December and we spent the entire day prepping the models, styling them and photographing them in various hairstyles, makeup and wardrobe changes. Matt created two unique make up styles. The first was very true to the 60’s with bright tones and dramatic liner. His second looks were more avante gard driven and included elaborate body painting on each of the girls.

image by Genna Yussman Greene/Absolute Studio

image by Genna Yussman Greene/Absolute Studio

Staying true to the 1960’s Matt painted lashes on all the models. I especially loved the white lipstick he painted on model Lucy’s lips for one of her looks. Cat eyes and winged eyeliner as well as heavily contrasting eyelids were done all on the models.

image by Genna Yussman Greene/Absolute Studio

image by Genna Yussman Greene/Absolute Studio

I kept the styles fairly sleek for each of the models and for Dakota I used custom clip in fringe.. I was channeling Cher for this look and used a straightening iron throughout her entire head of hair for a sleek finish.

For model Kelsey, I had to first set her hair by applying a volumizer and styling her hair to give it body and to smooth our her curls. I then reset her hair with a large curling iron of which I allowed to cool and set. Afterwards the hair was brushed out and lightly teased. I wanted that big 60’s volume. Very go-go girl. I especially love the glasses Genna paired Kelsey with for one of the images. It reminded me a lot of modern Tom Ford adds but with a sixties flavor.

Kelsey second look was quickly wrapped up in a french twist. Cyndi assisted Genna dressing all the models and prepping each set design.

Our collection, “Mod Moods” was published during quarantine in the April 2020 issue of Picton Magazine. I was so grateful to see this collection release. The entire team worked so hard and the models brought so much energy to the project. Thank you to Picton Magazine for the lovely spread.

RECLAIMED

Great ideas and concepts can stem from anywhere. Executing the vision ones see in their mind can easily be shared with a group of people who further bring into their own artistic creativity to further bring the vision to life. One of the models, Katya Estes I had booked for a hair collection at Absolute Studio INC. We have worked together several times and she is an amazing muse to channel any look. I asked her to send me the images of which I loved and sent to our team, Genna Yussman Greene and Tony Welscher.

I contacted make up artist, Bethany Hood to do make up. This would be one of our last collection together since she was relocating to L.A. to work on film and sets out there. She gladly agreed to come to the studio and to work on Katya’s beautiful face.

What really brought this collection to life was the wardrobe. Genna literally went to Goodwill and purchased used sleeping bags, bed sheets, part of a childs car seat, belts and unconventional items. She literally pieced and draped the fabrics on Katya into three solid looks. This is really what made this collection pop with a Goodwill “Couture” vibe.

For the hairstyling I created to contrasting looks that swayed to the avant grade; asymmetrical, irregular and gaudy. I basically stacked 2/3 wigs for each look on Katya’s head. I first secured her hair to her scalp with braids to created a foundation to support the wigs. I used several round hair pads to create the shape along with Kanekalon braiding hair of which I covered even more of the hair pads and pinned them into the overall shape. Once completed I took black elastic cord and tied it with no rhyme around the entire form. Redken’s Control Addict 28 hairspray was a must on set!!

for Make up, Bethany created a very clean, dewy canvas on Katya. Soft defined brows, Shimmer/highlighter brushed crossed both cheeks and eyelids. Soft warm eyeshadow with a tint of orange and a blood orange lip to complete the look.

After shooting, Images were edited by Genna and prepared for publication. You never know how long it maybe for the publication gets excepted for print from any publication but we didn’t have to wait long. Elegant Magazine eagerly accepted the collection and it was published in a 7 page fashion spread in the Nov/Dec 2018 issue. We were ecstatic about the release and grateful to Elegant Magazine.

We spent about 8 hours prepping Katya for three looks on set. Tony photographed Katya on a light grey backdrop with overhead lighting to create “Shadows”.

Life always throws obstacle in your way…The past year our team worked very hard to produce new materials for 2019. It was so good to finally be able to reveal and release some of the work we worked so hard to create and grateful to all the people involved. It’s important in life to take down time, reinvent, rebalance, reflect and celebrate all wins.

The SUCCUBUS Chronicles

Succubus. Vampire. Demon. Creatures of the Night. Years ago I did a a collaborative series fueled by my love of horror films and halloween. It would exercise my passion for fashion and hair, produce two sequel, involve lots of talented artists, published three times and created an amazing experience. Looking back in retrospect we created a timeless body of work that is worth a revisit….The Succubus Chronicles

The initial collection was conjured together with award winning make up artist, Isidro Valencia and with published photographer, Joey Goldsmith. The three of us discussed our love for all things macabre and dark and wanted to create a serious collection inspired by the folklore of the “succubus”. I was responsible with both hair and styling along with creative direction with both Joey and Isidro. We secured three models and got permission to shoot at the historical Culbertson Mansion in Downtown Louisville, Kentucky.

We spent an entire day at the eerie Culbertson mansion with its beautiful construction and full of historical antiques. I was not allowed to use hairspray whatever on the premises as it would collect in the air and unto the vintage heirlooms. That was a fun challenge. I was also in charge of styling and purchased expensive garments from Goodwill of which I paired jewelry and accessories.

Joey did an amazing job of telling a story with the three models we had. He scouted various areas of the mansion prior to setting up lights and for staging every area we utilized. Jacey Calloway was our lead who created the allure and beauty a succubus needs in order to drain the life and energy from her victims. Chris Diaz and Erica Goldsmith play the unsuspecting couple that venture into the home of the succubus. As the night progress so do Jacey’s power and both Erica and Chris become creatures of the night.

Isidro created a very clean palette that encompassed the sultriness the models needed but turned it up a notch when the Succubus turned into her dark form. Heavy kohl rimmed eyes and defined brows with lots of contour and red lips. For hair I made a lot of custom extensions but wanted lots of texture with curls and lots of volume. Kind of the old world meets the new world for a timeless feel.

A sequel was brought up a year later and we wanted to go bigger and harder with this one. So many ideas came to mind but we knew the fashions would play a larger role for this and so we asked designer Genna Yussman Greene to create a collection for a follow up to our Succubus. She created a very slick and sexy collection in dark hues of red, violet and black featuring various textures, slim fitting and strategically showed off skin.

We talked about using Jacey as our lead and inviting both Erica and Chris back but needed to up the ante and added two new models, Elora Antunez and John Wells. We split the shooting in two days. Day one was at ThoughtFly Studios and focused more on the artistry of hair and make up and was strictly beauty images. Day 2 was on location in full fashion editorial mode. This way we created two collections with two completely different vibes using the same models.

Runway On The Beach

Summer is the time when women rule and the world celebrates its many Queens. Genna Yussman Greene (Photographer & Stylist), Matthew Tyldesley (Hairstylist) and Caleb Yeske (Makeup Artist) celebrate summer and the power of women in this Summer spread. The looks are strong, beautiful and give women everywhere the inspiration to rule this season. Genna brings us a global tribal look that is regal, sexy and powerful. Complimenting this powerful look Matt proves that hair serves as a woman’s most convincing crown while Caleb’s makeup is the war paint perfect for every warrior queen. Summer is a woman’s time to shine. She owns her space and she will cede ground to no man! - Love Vascone

I was excited when photographer and designer, Genna Yussman Greene asked me if I would be interested in shooting a swimsuit collection for summer 2018. I was beyond ready and wanted to do some sleek ponytails and big, voluminous hair. We need three models that were in top shape and we had worked with the three booked models in the past.

Genna had purchased some african influenced swim wear and we wanted to incorporate that into this collection for a worldly feel. The looks are fashionable yet still wearable. I chose to keep the hair simple, commercial and glamorous. Custom hair pieces were used on all three models with a couple braids and large barrel curling irons to set the hair.

Make up artist, Caleb Yeske created a nice neutral palette for each model with soft smokey eyes, red and violet lip hues and ample bronzer for a "beach" side look.

My keep Redken styling products on set were Guts 10 Volume spray foam and my Sam Villa hair dryer and round brush. I wanted to create a little volume pryer to setting the hair with curling irons. I used a couple large marcels irons with Iron Shape 11, allowed the hair to cool. Afterwards each section was backcombed at the root area and lightly brushed out. Fashion Works 12 working spray was a must. I did a flat wave on Emily using the Sam Villa straightening iron. Custom made ponytails that matched each models haircolor were added for length and density.

The day went amazingly well just under eight hours. Two looks allotted per model for hair and make up with Caleb and I. Lots of snacks and scheduling are key to success.

My Vintage Valentine

Romance, Beauty, love and all things pretty. I have wanted to do a Valentine Themed photoshoot for some time. My creative partner, Genna Yussman Greene suggested we do one at the beginning of 2017.  Genna had put together some vintage dressers and I wanted to do some classy updos and polished hair. We enlisted our buddy, Isidro Valencia for make up and two gorgeous models and our team was set.

z1+JPG.jpg

We wanted to fuse romance, with big hair and vintage styling for a timeless feel. Genna ordered a custom floral backdrop to be used for the shoot. We chose two gorgeous models, Emily and Kristina. We have worked with both before and chose both girls for their beautiful facial structures, Their tall lean looks and their positive attitudes on set.

This collection was release exclusively by Bangstyle as a featured collection. The staff at Bangstyle have been so supportive of the work we do and they said the timing for the release was perfect.

Next hair was pulled upwards into a couple of ponytails. A small hair pad was used for the bump on top that hair was covered with Emily's hair using Fashion Works 12. I smoothed the hair using a small finishing brush. The other ponytails that hair was backcombed, smoothed and rolled into shape with bobbie pins. Finished with Control Addict 28 and Shine Flash 03.

Flaunt

About a year ago I contacted photographer, Gary Barragan to photograph my texture collection. I wanted to focus on romantic, classic hairstyling with a vintage feel and modern flair. I love hairdressing and wanted this collection to really showcase my hairdressing skills.

complete collection photographed by Gary Barragan

complete collection photographed by Gary Barragan

I would of course enlist my favorite make up artist, Isidro Valencia and Wardrobe designer/stylist, Genna Yussman Greene.

Flaunt 2.0

Flaunt 2.0

I of course spent a couple weeks practicing the hairstyles on mannequins. Braiding, Setting hair, creating volume, backcombing, securing ponytails and curls. I ended up booking a total of 5 models so I had my work cut out for me. Time was very imperative and as such a long day for make up and for finishing hair. Luckily I wanted minimal for wardrobe and Genna did a great job putting together the necklaces.

the team

the team

We spent an entire day doing the collection. It took about 12 hours and the my table was filled with every brush, curling iron, hairspray. Hair extensions, clips, elastics and pins of all sorts to tackle every head of hair that entered the room.

its all in the set up

its all in the set up

At this point in my career, I understand that sometimes I may have a certain expectation for executing a hairstyle I practiced but sometimes they just don't work on the model chosen. This is really when one has to think smart, stay positive and move on. You really have to think about how the hair will compliment the model and balance her features. Thats the nature of the photoshoot...you make it work. The discoveries are quite impressive.

For creating this look on Kristina, her hair was micro crimped all over using Sam Villa's texture iron and Redken's Iron Shape 11. Hair was then separated on top and the back hair was backcombed and secured into a roll with hair pins. The top section was backcombed and formed into the top row connecting the first roll. Worked into shape with Fashion Works 12 and finished with Control Addict 28.

The from was blown straight with a Denman brush, hairdryer and Redken's Argan Oil 6 and Align 12. Next the front was marcelled iron into a set. Once cooled, the hair as formed into shape and the back was released and teased out. Finished with Control Addict 28 and Shine Flash 03 for high shine.
